Clipsal 500 night event unlikely to happen

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill says staging the Clipsal 500 street circuit event under lights is unlikely to happen following a feasability study into the proposal.
While he said negotiations with V8 Supercars were ongoing, he added it was unlikely the 2013 event would be held under lights and doubted the event would lose its season-opening status as a result of rejecting the proposal.
The night event idea came from V8 Supercars supremo Tony Cochrane, who proposed that qualifying and the first race of the event could be held on the Friday and Saturday nights respectively.
At the time he said: "With our new media rights deal going forward, we have a huge desire to stage the opening round at least partially under lights.
"We are hopeful that Adelaide with its 15th event next year will take it to the next level and that the government and Premier will see their way forward on this, but we are pretty keen to move forward.
"We would like to do a night race at the opening round, whether the opening round is here or somewhere else."
According to Weatherill, the SA Motor Sport Board feasibility study said a night race could potentially provide some benefits with possible increased television ratings and sponsorship.
